Earlier this week, I introduced the Blondeshell Beauty Tips blog series and today, I’m excited to bring you the first installment. As women, we’re always trying to do what we can to save our hair and skin. One thing people don’t give much thought to is the kind of linens they sleep on. It may seem insignificant, but in reality, if you’re sleeping with cotton pillowcases, you’re doing serious long-term damage to your skin and hair.
People make fun of me because no matter where I go, if I’m staying the night, I bring my satin pillowcase. However, I bet once you read this blog post and realize how beneficial satin pillowcases really are, you’ll be doing the same before long.
Since switching to satin pillowcases can make all the difference in the way your skin and hair looks (and feels), I just had to share this beauty tip with you! So, keep reading to learn some of the amazing beauty benefits of satin pillowcases.
Avoid Hair Breakage
As you sleep, your body tosses and turns every so often. This creates friction between your hair and your pillowcase. Most people have cotton sheets, but cotton absorbs moisture and natural oils from our skin and hair. When there’s friction, this causes your hair to snag. Satin, by nature, is much smoother and softer than cotton and allows your hair and skin to slide effortlessly across the pillow.
Prevents Wrinkles and Fine Lines
Ever slept with a cotton pillowcase and noticed “sleep lines” on your face the next morning? Moisture is imperative to slowing the signs of aging, and as I previously mentioned, cotton absorbs moisture and natural oils in skin and hair. Spending eight hours each night with your face pressed against cotton results in some serious loss of moisture, and it puts unnecessary stress on your skin.
Collagen is that ever-important protein that gives our skin elasticity and strength. As we age, collagen production slows and the cell structures begin to weaken. This results in fragile skin that lacks the original elasticity, as wrinkles start setting in. Any repeated motion (such as a smile or frown) or activity (such as sleeping in a certain position) will result in extra loss of collagen. This means that if you sleep with a cotton pillowcase for long enough, those lines you wake up to will eventually become permanent.
Sleeping on your back is the best solution, but if you just can’t seem to break your stomach or side sleeping habit, then a satin pillowcase is a sure way to prevent this.
Saves Your Lashes
If you’re a side sleeper using cotton pillowcases, you’re probably damaging your eyelashes. Whenever I am doing a client’s makeup, I can immediately tell which side they sleep on by the quality of their lashes. Typically, side sleepers have bent, thin lashes on one eye (the side they lay on). Yet again, this is an easy fix. Simply switching to a satin pillowcase allows your face to glide effortlessly across the pillow without snagging any lashes.
Save Your Style
If you hate waking up to horrendous bed head after a night of tossing and turning, then resting your head on a satin pillowcase may be just what you need. Satin won’t create the kinks that cotton does once you lay your perfectly styled head down for a good night’s sleep. Not only will you keep your style and save the moisture your hair needs, you will likely cut your morning “getting ready” time in half.
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention how satin sheets just feel sexier. So, give the luxurious feel of satin a chance and save your hair and skin in the process. You can find satin pillowcases at most beauty supply stores and even Wal-Mart or Target for under $10.
If you’re already sleeping on satin pillowcases, tell me… What kind of skin and hair improvements have you noticed?
