How to Apply Blush for Your Face Shape

Blush: When it’s done right it can bring life to your face, but when done wrong, it can make you look like you belong with the Ringling Brothers. Improper application can make you look ridiculous, which is why many women avoid wearing it at all costs.

But don’t worry! As part of my Blondeshell Beauty Tips blog series, you ask and I answer. I’ve got two blog posts that will hopefully turn blush from foe to friend. So keep reading Part 1 to find out how to apply blush for your face shape, and a few other helpful tips to give you a radiant natural glow just in time for spring!

How To Apply Blush for Your Face Shape

Knowing your face shape is important to know how to apply many different types of makeup, as well as which hairstyles will look best on you. There are several different face shapes, but many have the same characteristics. For the sake of this post, I’ve narrowed them down to just five: Long, Oval, Heart, Square and Round. If you aren’t sure which face shape you have, this really simple face shape quiz should be a big help. So, be sure to take it and then follow my tips on how to apply blush for your respective face shape.

How To Apply Blush to a Long Face

blush_long_facesFor the sake of this post, I’m including rectangle faces in with long faces, since the blush application tips are very similar.

If you have a long face, chances are you want your makeup to create an illusion of width. You can accomplish this by properly applying blush.

Dip your brush into your blush and glide over the apples of your cheeks and pull outwards toward the temples. Be sure to gently blend your blush for a natural look.

Tip: If you want to create a subtle blushing glow, apply a cream blush to your cheeks, pulling outward to the temples first. Follow by applying your foundation and a translucent powder. The result will be gorgeous luminous skin.

How To Apply Blush to an Oval Face

Ladies, if you have an oval face, you’re in luck. Typically, this face shape is very proportional and makes applying blush much easier. To find the best place to apply, touch your fingers to your cheek and find the most prominent part (also known as the apples of your cheeks).

If you’re still not sure where the apples of your cheek are, look in the mirror and smile. The part of your cheek that rises under your eyes are the apples of your cheeks (the “meatiest part, if you will). This is where you will want to apply your blush. Start at the apples and blend upwards along your cheekbone. Depending on your skin tone, this will also be used to highlight your face.

Tip: Since most oval-shaped face shapes have high cheekbones, avoid using too much blush to achieve a natural look. A light application of a subtle color along your cheekbones will create a natural highlight and beautifully accentuate the natural contours of your face.

How to Apply Blush to a Heart-Shaped Face

heart_shape_face_blushFor the sake of this post, I’m including triangle faces in with heart-shaped faces, since they are very similar, as are the blush application tips.

For my heart-shaped faces out there, you’re another one of the “lucky ones”. Your face has gorgeous definition, and is very similar to the triangle face shape. The biggest difference is your hairline. (Heart-shaped faces have a widow’s peak.)

Because Heart-Shaped faces and Triangle faces have very prominent chins, you will want to apply blush right under the apples of your cheeks and sweep upwards, towards each ear. This will create an illusion that will soften the chin.

Tip: Always be sure to use a blush brush and blend upwards in small circles. This will create a well-blended, natural look.

How to Apply Blush to Square Face Shape

If the width and length of your face are almost the same with a very defined jawline, then chances are you have a square face shape. Because your jawline is sharp, you want to apply your blush directly to the apples of your cheeks. This will work to soften the angles of your face. Try this, and if this doesn’t achieve the look you’re hoping for, try applying a few inches from the sides of your nose and blend outwards.

Tip: Don’t blend your blush too far to the sides of your face, as this will widen your face. And forget about using those little brushes that come with drugstore powder blushes. Make sure to use a high-quality brush with tapered ends to achieve the best look possible.

How to Apply Blush to a Round Face

round_face_blushRound faced women have faces that are, well, round. This can be frustrating when trying to give definition and shape to your face. However, properly contouring and highlighting is a real game-changer.

One way to achieve flawless definition is by highlighting your cheek with blush. Apply blush to your cheekbones and blend outwards, toward your temples, to slim the face. Avoid applying blush directly to the apples of your cheeks, which can make your face look even rounder.

Tip: You will want to apply your blush with an angular motion and using an angled face brush will help greatly. I use this Angled Face Brush ($20) from bareMinerals, but you can use the more affordable e.l.f. Studio Angled Blush Brush ($3).

More Tips for Flawless Blush Application

  • If you tend to have redness or blotchiness on your face, be sure to use a great primer before beginning your makeup application. This will even out any redness and create a smooth base for great application.
  • For long-lasting blush, consider applying a translucent powder to your cheeks before applying any powder blush. This is especially beneficial for people with oily skin.
  • If you’re looking for long-wear and have an issue with your color fading by lunch time, the solution may be creating layers. Do this by applying a base of cream blush and following it with a translucent powder and finish with your powder blush of choice.
  • Remember, you don’t want to look like a clown, but if you must wear a very bold cheek color, be sure to apply it with a brush and not a pad. This will provide a smooth finish, as opposed to blotches of bright colors slapped onto your cheek.
  • As always, make sure you have the right tools to apply your makeup. A quality blush brush will make all the difference in the world.

So there you have it. Now that you’ve got that down, be sure to read my post on the best blushes for your skin tone and type.
