If your mom is anything like my mom, then she’s always on-the-go. Growing up, my mom was mom and dad. To put it nicely, she worked her ass off. It wasn’t until later in life (after I, the baby of three, graduated) that my mom started doing things “for her” again. Now, my mom is back on track, focusing on herself. She gets her hair done every month, and even has the occasional Ulta splurge. *sniff sniff* I’m so proud.
When it comes to everyday life, moms usually take the backseat to their family and when it comes to life’s luxuries, moms usually miss out completely. That’s one thing about moms, and why we have a day like Mother’s Day… They’re always making sacrifices for the ones they love and every now and then a little “Thank You” goes a long way. This Sunday, May 11 is Mother’s Day (DON’T FORGET!) and since mom can always use some extra pampering, I’ve compiled a list of the best beauty gifts for Mother’s Day.
Besides, there’s definitely some truth to that old adage, “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy”.
Best Brush Kits Gifts
If your mom is still using sponge sticks for her eye shadow, shame on you! Step up to the plate and be a good son or daughter and get her one (or both) of these quality, budget-friendly brush sets.
Real Techniques Core Collection Face Brushes: Real Techniques Core Collection from Ulta is $17.99, and has the four most important brushes for creating a flawless face. The Detailer Brush is ideal for concealing problem areas or for applying lipstick, the Pointed Foundation Brush effortlessly builds liquid foundation for your desired coverage, the Buffing Brush works best with mineral foundation, and the Contour Brush allows delicate application of any highlighter. It also comes with a handy travel case to keep your brushes in tip-top shape.
IT Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe: IT Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe 6 Piece Brush Set with Travel Case is a collection of six must-have brushes for any woman. You get $182 worth of brushes for only $39.50. I love a deal, and this is hard to pass up. The set includes a Multi-Powder Brush, Flat Foundation Brush, Flat Concealer Brush, No-Tug Eye Crease Brush, No-Tug Allover Eye Shadow Brush, and a No-Tug Eyeliner and Brow Brush all housed in a sophisticated travel case.
And after she opens her presents, sit her down and teach her how to use them all. Check out my post on the 7 Makeup Brushes Every Woman Should Own for some helpful tips. Not to mention, she will surely appreciate the extra quality time.
Best Bath Gift Sets
Bath time is likely the only time of day your mom gets to really unwind, so make it extra special for her and grab her one (or more) of these luxurious bath time products.
Philosophy Bath Gift Set: Philosophy’s Amazing Grace Gift Set includes a 2 ounce bottle of their Eau de Toilette Spray, an 8 ounce bottle of their Firming Body Emulsion, and an 8 ounce bottle of their shampoo, bath, & shower gel for an unbeatable price of $55 (and you get over $80 worth of stuff)! Make bathtime even more special and pair it with the limited release Amazing Grace candle by Philosophy candle I mention in the section below.
Clinique Body Scrub: Clinique Sparkle Skin Body Exfoliator is only $25 and will make mom’s skin glow. Few things in life compare to he rejuvenated feeling one has after a spa scrub treatment, but if you don’t want to fork over the cash to get your mom a day at the spa, why not get her a luxurious, affordable at-home body scrub like this?
Your mom works hard, so something like this would be extra special to help her relax. Pair it with one of my favorite bath time candles and she will be a new woman by the time she’s done.
With the exception of my mom, candles always make a great gift. (My mom HATES most fragrances, so perfume is out of the question, too…) However, most people love candles, so consider one of the candles listed below.
Philosophy Candles: Small, affordable, and on a limited release, you need to give this Amazing Grace candle by Philosophy a try. Pair it with the Philosophy Bath Set. It’s only $15 and diffuses a relaxing, floral scent throughout the room.
Kate Spade Candles: If you want to spend a bit more, try Kate Spade. In my opinion, nearly everything Kate Spade designs is a hit. When it comes to her adorable collection of candles, I’d say it’s a home run. Not only do they smell amazing, they add decorative character to any room. My favorites are the kate spade “Light up the Room” Fig Candle in the glamorous gold dot design and this kate spade “Imagination” candle. You can find them at Nordstrom, Macy’s, or Bed, Bath & Beyond for $40.
Like I said, when it comes to my mom and her sensitive nose, fragrances are out of the question, but if your mom loves perfumes, this makes a great gift. Get her a light, summer-friendly scent that is long-lasting so she can spritz on first thing in the morning and smell great all day. Floral fragrances are all the rage this time of year, so check out some of my favorites for mom.
MARC JACOBS Daisy Eau So Fresh: MARC JACOBS Daisy Eau So Fresh is a fun, fresh scent infused with subtle hints of grapefruit, raspberry and jasmine that is perfect for the adventurous, bubbly-spirited mom. Run into Nordstrom, Sephora, Macy’s or Ulta and pick a bottle up for $70-$100. The whimsical bottle design is sure to make mom smile, too.
Calvin Klein Euphoria for Women: Calvin Klein Euphoria for Women repeatedly tops the list of “Best Selling Perfumes” and there’s a reason. Euphoria isn’t just the name. The light, feminine scent is alluring yet playful, making it a versatile perfume that is perfect for both glamorous evenings or laid-back Summer BBQs. Available at most department stores for $50-$75.
Laura Mercier Eau Gourmande: One of the fine fragrances from the Laura Mercier Eau Gourmande Collection is likely to suit your mother’s fragrance preference. Choose from six different scents including ambre vanillé, vanille gourmande, crème de pistache, almond coconut, crème brûlée, and fresh fig. All are priced around $55. Stop by your nearest Nordstrom or Macy’s, smell the difference, choose your favorite for mom, and have it ready to give to her this Sunday.
Subscription Glam Bags & Boxes
These are a great way to keep mom feeling special all year long since they truly are a gift that keeps giving.
They’re all over the place now, and if your mom doesn’t have one yet, you should set her up with a monthly delivery of prestige beauty products. Simply answer a few questions about mom’s personal taste and each month, she will receive a box of deluxe sample sized beauty goodies from prestige brands like Benefit, Urban Decay, Kiehl’s, etc. My personal favorite monthly beauty product subscription service is ipsy, but there are several others to try.
Beauty Army: For $12 a month, your mom can choose which samples she receives. If your mom is likely to forget, or doesn’t have time to worry about picking out her products, set her up with something a bit more hands-off like ipsy or Birchbox. Check it out here: www.beautyarmy.com.
ipsy Glam Bag: For only $10 a month, your mom will receive five deluxe beauty samples in a super chic collectible makeup bag. The products inside are selected based on your answers to a short, but thorough beauty quiz when you sign up. Check it out here: www.ipsy.com.
Birchbox: Another $10 a month service, and maybe the most popular on the market, your Birchbox brings a mix of four or five products from luxury brands (like Nars, Weleda, Stile, etc.) plus one non-beauty related product to your mom’s doorstep each month. Check it out here: www.birchbox.com.
All of these subscription services offer a yearly charge with a slight discount, or you can have the base charge deducted from your account on a monthly basis.
